Well, another Wight-Box session. This one didn’t have combat, but it was exciting nonetheless (at least, I think so). As usual, this is a zero-prep game, and I go in with absolutely no plan and nothing prepped.
So, let’s begin.
The party of Leo, Billy, and Feyrith the Elf, along with the footmen, stayed in the razed village. Yesterday, Valfor arrived with soldiers from Zidon. He was given orders by the Patriarch of Zidon and the Church there. The Patriarch could not be there because he was dealing with a dragon issue east of Zidon. A mercenary company angered the dragons in the area east of Zidon. The dragon attacked Zidon in retaliation but was fended off by the city’s defenses. The Patriarch went out to hunt this dragon. If you remember in the last post, the players may have upset Kurnax the Blue, a blue dragon who took over a castle to the north of Blacktree a generation ago.
In this session, the players elected to travel northwest and look for the Patriarch himself. They told Valfor to head to hex 07.06 and set up a military camp in case the dragon or his forces arise. They traveled north into hex 05.05 and then into 06.04. On 06.04, the party encountered a pegasus. Leo, who is lawful, communicates with the creature but ultimately wants to leave the beast alone. The pegasus had a neutral response as a reaction roll but ultimately flew away. The party took this as a good sign.
The party moved into hex 05.04 and ran into an injured light footman wearing a cross on his armor. He informed the party he was a member of the Patriarch’s forces. They found the dragon’s lair and attempted to ambush it while it slept. It was not sleeping…
He told them there were two green dragons: a very old one and a younger one.
These footman lead them back to the lair. There, they saw many dead bodies in front of a cave entrance. The party waited for nightfall, and Leo snuck out to look for the body of the Patriarch. After 20 minutes of searching, he found his body and said a prayer over him. Just as Leo was turning to leave, the dragon came out!
I treated the entrance as part of the dungeon and rolled a random encounter. Really, the only thing living in this cave is the dragons, so that’s what I encountered. I rolled for surprise for the dragon, and Leo was lucky. The dragon was surprised and, therefore, unaware of Leo’s presence.
Leo dropped down, played dead, and hoped the dragon wouldn’t eat him. The dragons ate some dead men near their entrance and then lethargically went back inside. Leo was unharmed. Leo waited 5-minutes and went back to the rest of the guys at the tree line. They moved away to make camp at a safe place.
The next day, they traveled to 06.05 and encountered some pagan nomads in the desert. The party was respectful, and the nomads were kind enough to show hospitality. These people worshiped mountains and viewed all mountains as sacred places where the gods lived.
The party rested with the nomads and left in the morning. Feyrith gave the nomads 100gp as a thank you, and in return, the nomads ladened them with food and supplies.
The party got to a group of scouts of Valfor in hex 06.05 as well. They informed them of the news of the Patriarch’s death. The party continued on to the camp. After discussing this with Valfor, they elected to send a rider to Black Tree, to the Razed Village, to Zidon to warn each area of the dragons and of the death of the Patriarch.
The characters will unlock on Saturday evening when they get to the military camp with Valfor. So we will see what happens now. The bishops of Zidon will have to elect a new Patriarch. Dragons are on the loose. So, who knows what will happen?
Question: does the question of making/surveying large tracts of land come up in play?
The hex notation makes sense (06.07 and so on) but how do the players know what is in a given direction? Are they all hexes that have been explored previously, contents randomly generated?
