I have been running a strict time (1:1) Wight-Box game for supporters. We have had a handful of sessions experimenting with these ideas, pushing the boundaries of what 0e is capable of doing and general fantasy adventure gaming. This is a catch-post to get those unfamiliar up to speed on what is going on in our campaign.
The first session involved Leo the Large (Fighting-Man) and his Squire (Billy) in 04.05 at the village of Black Tree. With him was Ramelzeon the Wizard and a few light footmen. From Father Stellios, the village priest, they learned his deacon was kidnapped a week prior in a Kobold raid. Leo, a warrior for Christ, volunteered to rescue the Deacon from their lair in hex 08.05.
The players have rescued this deacon, learned a vampire is in the area, met a Patriarch of the Church, and tricked some giants multiple times (those giants hate them now and will for sure try to kill them on sight if they run into them again), and some have been killed by the undead corpses of powerful warriors in dungeons guarding the treasure.
7/9/2024 Session
I don’t have the time to detail every exploit they have performed over the last few weeks, so we will start with the last session yesterday. Feyrith the Elf (Magic-User), Thomas the Acolyte (Cleric), and Frank of Blacktree (Fighting-Man) heard of a village that had been taken over by Shagol the Orc. The orcs have been raiding the countryside from this village and harassing travelers. The party decided to investigate elsewhere from the dungeon at 08.05 and to investigate at 04.05 where the village resides.
The party traveled without incident. Feyrith had a wagon and two draft horses pulling it, and the party hired all the men in the village who could fight (10 light footmen in total).
The party arrived at the village about midday from the south, and the orcs were not out because of the sunlight. Thomas approached the gate and met an orc (orcs are pig orcs in our campaign). He insulted the orc who ran up the hill, most likely to inform others of visitors. Thomas talked to a few human slaves who were working, 22 in all. He convinced them to leave with him, and the convincing factor for them was seeing armed men arrive soon after Thomas. The footmen set their spears, and 8 orcs appeared lazily from the homes in the damaged village. These orcs saw the slaves talking to strangers and became angry. The initiative was rolled, and it was simultaneous. Arrows flew from some footmen with short bows while others braced their spears. A few orcs fell. The orcs crashed into the spearmen while the slaves were rushed to the back.
The orcs attacked and damaged some footmen, but none were killed. Frank and Thomas killed a few more orcs, and the footmen did. More orcs appeared, and Feyrith hit them with a sleep spell as they approached. The group killed these as they slept. A larger orc, potentially Shagol, was watching the conflict from the top of the hill at the burned-out church.
The party retreated and left for the northern city of Zidon on 02.03. There, they sought an audience with a high-level cleric named Ardaric, whom they had met in the past. Ardaric rewarded them for saving innocent people from orcish slavery with 400gp. He also immediately made preparations to organize his forces in his control towards an assault on the village to slay the orcs and retake the village. Ardaric has 50 Heavy Calvary, 30 horsed crossbowmen, and 50 heavy footmen under his control against the 220 orcs who reside in the village.
The slaves informed them that there were only 110 in the village at any time, as Shagol generally kept many out raiding and pillaging.
Today (7/10/2024), I rolled and determined that the orcs are unaware of approaching forces. Tomorrow, the players will arrive with the forces of Ardaric, and we plan to resolve the battle via text tomorrow. It should be a good time; I will update what occurs when the battle ends.
